5 Best Essential Oils for Natural House Cleaning

Natural Cleaning.jpg

Hey everyone! Today, I wanted to share with you some tips and tricks for tackling your household cleaning using the non-toxic power of essential oils.

Essential oils are concentrated essences of a variety of plants and carry great antimicrobial qualities. Just be sure to always search for pure essential oils where the oil is the only ingredient, as there are many brands that tend to cut essential oils with other products. Normally, your local health and wellness store or holistic vender should carry these. And, don’t be afraid to ask questions!

I have found that most DIY cleaners made from essential oils require dilution with water so that the solution does not irritate your skin, senses, or your furry companions. Always be sure to follow the directions on the label.

Here’s a general rule for dilution: combine 10 drops of your favorite essential oil with 1 cup of water. You can find small spray bottles at your favorite retailer that are labeled 237 mL (which is equivalent to 1 cup).

Another fun cleaning tip is to try combining two or more essential oils for unique scents and multiple uses! Try combining peppermint and eucalyptus for a great mood booster.

So, without further ado, here are the best essential oils for household cleaning without all of the added chemicals:

EUCALYPTUS ESSENTIAL OIL FOR CLEANING

Eucalyptus oil not only smells clean, it proves to be a great, natural germicide. This combo makes it ideal for smelly bathrooms or neglected kitchens, where pests are sure to find those days-old crumbs.

Want to boost the scent of your clothes in the washer? Put a few drops in your next wash cycle for a natural, clean smell.

You can freshen up hard-to-clean items like your mattress and your little one’s favorite stuffed animals by combining eucalyptus essential oil with baking soda and scrubbing them gently.

LAVENDER ESSENTIAL OIL FOR CLEANING

Similar to eucalyptus, lavender essential oil smells wonderful and can invigorate your senses while you are doing your household cleaning. Lavender is a natural antibacterial and there are multiple ways to use it.

This makes it ideal for washing dishes while not being too harsh on your skin as long as you only use about 5-10 drops per wash.

About 5 to 10 drops of lavender essential oil combined with around a cup of white vinegar will help cut through grease and disinfect surfaces. White vinegar alone doesn’t smell that great, so adding lavender essential oil really helps with the potency of the vinegar smell.

LEMON ESSENTIAL OIL FOR CLEANING

Antiviral and antibacterial, this citrus bomb is sure to not only help degrease surfaces and items around your abode, but it will enliven your surroundings and revitalize your senses.

Try combining 5 to 10 drops of pure lemon essential oil with a cup of water in a spray bottle and simply spray around your house or let the mist fall onto porous surfaces like a fabric couch to awaken your room with a natural splendor.

Your kitchen can become grimy over weeks of cooking, so spray this same combination onto greasy or sticky areas, let it sit for a minute or so, and scrub out the grime.

PINE ESSENTIAL OIL FOR CLEANING

A lot of us may have grown up around or used something like Pine-Sol to clean floors and other surfaces.

Well, pure pine essential oil can be used in the same way! Just drop it in some hot water and use it to clean your floors. It kills yeast spores, E.coli, and other common household germs. Not only that, you’ll bask in the natural and fresh scent that comes from the essential oil.

Bathrooms are prone to mold and mildew. Pine essential oil cuts through this as well!

PEPPERMINT ESSENTIAL OIL FOR CLEANING

A natural bacteria fighter, pure peppermint essential oil with water makes a great spray cleaner and deodorant.

If you have issues with ants or spiders, try combining 10-15 drops in 1 cup of water in a spray bottle. Then, shake well and spray in the cracks and crevices of your house to deter these pesky critters without harming them.

ESSENTIAL OILS FOR A NATURAL CLEANING ALTERNATIVE

Exposing yourself, your children, and your pets to the harmful chemicals commonly used to clean household can poorly affect your health and theirs over a lifetime of use. Also, some of them are just too harsh, especially on your skin.

I hope this information inspires a few combinations to help you clean your house and also positively change your mood while cleaning for a more peaceful process.
